Burial, Memorial & Survivor Benefits

What a veteran's family is entitled to, and where to turn when making arrangements or filing for survivor benefits.

HONORING THOSE WHO SERVED

Overview

This is never an easy page to write or to read. If you're here because you're planning ahead, or because a family member has recently passed, we want this to be as clear and as gentle as possible — the practical information you need, without making you dig for it.

A national or state veterans cemetery

The Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen and the DFW National Cemetery are the two nearest options, each with its own eligibility rules worth checking ahead of time.

A free headstone or grave marker

The VA provides this benefit even for veterans buried in private cemeteries, not just national ones.

A burial allowance

The VA offers a burial allowance that varies depending on whether the death was service-connected — worth checking regardless of the circumstances.

Survivor benefits (DIC)

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation is available to surviving spouses and dependents in many cases. It's a separate application from burial benefits, so don't assume one covers the other.

A place to remember

The Georgetown-Williamson County Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sun City is a local place of remembrance — you can read more about its story on our About page.
